The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry reports that, on average, teens spend about 7.5 hours a day watching screens, including computers, game consoles, smartphones, tablets, and television. While these devices can educate, entertain, and keep them in touch, overuse or accessing unacceptable content can counter the benefits.

Falling grades

Too much connectivity isn’t a good thing if it’s constantly interrupting school work and study time. Deep focus skills can’t develop in this distracted environment. Insist on device-free study blocks and introduce focus apps like Flipd, Forest, Habitica, and Opal. 

Weak social skills

Limited real-world interactions can lead to stunted empathy and nonverbal communication skills. Relying heavily on digital interactions — including games or AI chat — can limit opportunities to practice real‑world social skills.

Set an example as a parent and support in-person interactions, whether as a family or by encouraging your adolescent to bring friends home. 

Anxiety and depression

Seeing curated lives online can lead to unrealistic self-assessments and low self-esteem. Support offline activities and hobbies, set time limits for social media, and curate the content and feeds your teen uses. If necessary, learn how to block domains.

Harmful content

Blocking content and using parental controls may be your best course of action against algorithms that push toward marginal internet content. Normalize discussions about extreme content and online safety. 

Reduced attention

Short‑form content trains the brain to expect quick bursts of stimulation, making longer tasks feel harder to sustain. Encourage creative projects, model building, puzzles, and reading books — involved, thoughtful activities that provide deeper satisfaction. 

Sedentary living

Lounging on screens for hours on end means your teen is compromising their heart health, flexibility, and posture. Human bodies are made to move. Try connecting screen access to time spent being physically active. 

The key message to your teen is that the goal isn’t to eliminate screens; it’s about intentional use, balanced living, and all-around wellness. Whenever possible, set boundaries together with your teen.
